CRPP Synapse, Trauma & Addiction

Human work package

The Human Workpackage focuses on the study of memory patterns in patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD). Using daily diaries, we capture detailed data on the frequency, characteristics, and timing of memories related to trauma and addiction. These insights are crucial for understanding memory properties in the two disorders and for optimizing treatment schedules and enhancing patient outcomes. Our investigations explore the mechanistic parallels between PTSD and SUD, hypothesizing that experiencing one condition may predispose individuals to the other. This hypothesis is rigorously tested in both animal models and human clinical settings, aiming to refine therapeutic interventions based on precise memory pattern tracking.

Additionally, the workpackage supports a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of minocycline - a tetracycline antibiotic known for its potential to weaken adverse memory association - in treating both PTSD and SUD patients. This trial is complemented by animal studies that assess the minocycline and other drugs across these disorders, furthering our understanding of treatment possibilities.
